So what's with
all the nicknames?
Nicknames tend to be bookmarks for
actions you take in life as well as for time periods of your life. All
of the nicknames above were given to me...not just generated for some
sort of self-image modeling. Here they are with a brief story of how
I got them.
Sean The Shark
- In the summer
of 2002 at the skydiving school, a lot of people were throwing around
the word "shark" as a term for someone who was a player or
a flirt. Right before I graduated from the program, there was a party
at Liam Lineover's house. Myself and a girl named Heather
Johnston were joking around like mad and really drawing a bit of
attention. Not many people there knew us just yet but a few people knew
we were new students under Nickie Feegan. Nickie notice me chatting
it up a while with a girl and just yelled out "Sean The Shark!"
saying that I was hitting on the girl. Heather had been flirting a lot
that nite and looked at me and laughed...so I yelled at her saying..."What
are you looking at, SharkGrrl?!?!" Heather responded by putter
her hand over her head like a fin...I did the same and we charged each
other (fins up!) and smacked our (fin) hands together and almost clocking
our heads. That's how we became Sean The Shark & SharkGrrl.
Sean The Sheep -
So how did
I go from a cool nickname to the more subtle and corny Sean The Sheep
title? Nickie Feegan...The woman from England who taught me how
to skydive thought I was too "cuddly & nice" to bear the
"Shark" title which was really a term for more ruthless player-style
flirting. She calls me Sean the Sheep based on a "Wallace &
Grommett" character. Nowadays, people at the DZ use either nickname
depending on my behavior.
The Sean-
This one was
the consolidated nickname at the dropzone. It's actually the name that
ended up on my skydiving graduation photo. A guy named Gabor
who Sharkgrrl really had a crush on for a bit started calling
me that. This one really stuck last year...lately they've been callin
me SeanTheShark again while Nickie stays true to her SeanTheSheep name
for me. The "The Sean" nickname seems to be used a lot more
at karaoke nowadays. My friend Rachel Cohen who did Karaoke DJing
really helped to promote that nickname.
Seeen! -
This nickname
was started by Kelly Simon (Kellis). Kellis was always nicknaming
people and always had an entourage. I think I saw her alone twice. She's
the only woman I ever taught to fire-breathe. Kellis nicknamed people
so much I don'n know the names of some of her friends to this day! This
was my longest standing and most widely used nickname. The Dunkin crowds
and Amy (No)Moore's groups still call me Seeen to this
day. I have a thousand great memories associated to this name. Thank
you Kellis....Enjoy the roadsign...I'm sure no one noticed it's missing...LOL.
Boca De Fogo -
This nickname
is Potuguese for "Mouth Of Fire". I earned this name
through the Capoeiristas. Every person who plays Capoeira ultimately
gets a "street name". This tradition is based on the history
of the game. Some of the names can be brutal. names like "Dormanjoco"
(Sleepy) and "Gaza" (A frantic flapping bird) are
common. I got this name by firebreathing 27 times at a capoeira batizado
fund-raiser. My friend Rob got the nickname Sargento for
having been in the military and for how adamantly he vocalizes when
we have to do sit-ups or crunches.
I have other
nicknames that I've gained over the years, too. Not all of them were
good either....but I still appreciate them as bookmarks for points in
my personal history.
